How Social Games Are Changing Social Norms

Aarohi Shukla

Social games like Truth or Dare, Charades, and Never Have I Ever have existed for a long time, but they do more than just entertain at parties. These games have a special ability to test social norms and push limits. They get people to connect, start conversations, and try new things outside their usual habits. Let’s explore how these social games are growing and shifting our thoughts on topics, from gender roles to relationships.

Changing Gender Roles and Expectations

Games like Would You Rather and Kiss, Marry, Kill might look like just a bit of fun, but they can also shake up old-fashioned ideas about gender. When players face questions that turn expectations upside down — like choosing between what’s seen as a “guy thing” or a “girl thing” — it kicks off a talk about how we see gender. Any game can involve a man wearing a dress and make-up, or a woman playing an assassin while wearing men’s pants. Role-playing games, in particular, can make room for a lot of gender-bending, where a woman can play a traditionally masculine role, and vice versa, without judgement. Answering deep, personal questions can also help us connect with someone of the opposite sex, and understand their struggles and everyday experiences. These games let everyone speak their mind, knocking down old stereotypes and showing that there’s no single correct way to be yourself.

Challenging Relationships and Marriages

A game of Truth or Dare, Kiss-Marry-Kill, or Never Have I Ever can often reveal unexpected things about relationships. These games push players to tell personal tales, which can sometimes test usual ideas about love and marriage. For example, a round of Never Have I Ever might show that more people than you’d guess are attracted to people, or have had relationships with people that might be deemed “inappropriate” (wrongly!) by society. They can spark healthy,  judgement-free discussions about sexuality, sexual orientation, preferences, boundaries, consent, expectations, and so on. By making room for these stories, social games help make different kinds of relationships seem more normal, and prove that love doesn’t always fit into a box.

Bridging Cultural Differences

Social games have the power to bring together folks from all walks of life. Take Charades or Antakshari, for example, or a traditional game like Lagori or Kabaddi, that is unique to a culture. Cultural references in this game can turn into a fun way of kicking off chats about different customs, languages, and traditions. These games push players to bond over shared giggles and experiences even if they come from different cultural backgrounds. It’s a laid-back way to close the gap and boost understanding between people.

Promoting Inclusivity

Social games put everyone at the centre. Games like Would You Rather, Charades, or a light-hearted board game with buddies make room for all to join. These games don’t need physical skills or special talents, so folks of all ages and walks of life can play. Games like Charades or Pictionary mimic the everyday experiences of the deaf and mute, and can help us see life from their point of view. Many age-old games like chess, ludo, or antakshari can spark conversations about culture and traditions, and help us bridge cultural differences. Their timeless nature also attracts all age groups, from children to the elderly. This welcome mat rolls out for everyone – older people, those with disabilities, women, different religious groups, people with less money, LGBTQ+ folks, and people of different castes and ethnicities. These games remind us that everyone should have a chance to play, and that fun is for all.

A New Way to Connect

As social games keep changing, they’re at the forefront of how we interact with each other. These games push us to question social norms and think about our world in new ways. They offer a fun, light-hearted way to tackle big concepts, while bringing people closer.

Social games do more than just pass the time — they have a strong impact on change, whether by breaking down walls or bringing folks together. Next time you play Truth or Dare or ask your friends to join a game of Never Have I Ever, think about this: you’re not just having a good time — you’re taking part in a game that’s determining how we’ll socialize in the future. So, be respectful, inclusive, and kind. Keep your mind willing to accept, a heart open to love, and a spirit ready to play!
